Ponte Mellor Architects is currently working with the Embassy of Portugal on their newly acquired property located at 2012 Massachusetts Avenue, NW in Washington DC. The 100 year old historic building is to be renovated and expanded to house the Embassy's chancery, including the office of the Ambassador, the consulate, and all supporting functions. The project began with the provision of a property inspection report to Riggs Bank prior to the bank's acquisition of the land on behalf of Portugal. Ponte Mellor assisted in developing the required due diligence investigative reports covering the building envelope, structural systems and existing mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems.
Following the acquisition of the property, Ponte Mellor Architects interviewed the Ambassador and Deputy Chief of Mission to establish their goals for the use of the property and the diplomatic image of Portugal to be conveyed through the architectural presence of the building. We have worked with the embassy personnel to program all aspects of the functional building requirements including provisions for visiting diplomatic guests, the Ambassador's private office requirements, diplomatic communication requirements, staff offices, military requirements, food service, and parking.
Ponte Mellor developed the design for the building grounds, building infrastructure upgrades, interior design and furnishings, including an addition to the rear of the structure housing a communicating stair and mail facilities. The addition also provides an outdoor terrace at the Ambassador's floor and a new Consulate entry from P street. Construction management was provided by ECB Commercial
