Ponte Mellor Architects was requested to provide design assistance and coordinate development plan submission for a new Volkswagen dealership facility for the Hendrickson Auto Group in Westchester, Pennsylvania. Ponte Mellor Architects (PMA) incorporated Volkswagen USA's corporate facilities prototype standards for the showroom portion into a full service sales and service building. PMA provided initial site design and architectural plan concept drawings for VW review and local jurisdictional approval as part of the development plan approval process for the entire facility.
The development was the result of site utilization studies, traffic planning, service and customer staging/ parking studies and review of preliminary building cost data. PMA used this information to determine that using a steel framed pre-engineered building for service attached to a conventional showroom building would provide the client with a medium cost facility that would meet VWUSA design element requirements. PMA also chose to initially provide for near term expansion space that would initially serve as used car sales and display areas. Bases on a projected sales and service increase the building design allows for easy expansion of the service building and parts storage area and incorporation of the used car sales area to serve the needs of the brand's growth without the immediate capital needs of building a "too large" facility.
PMA scope of work included feasibility, development plan concept, site utilization plan concept, design and design development. Construction documents, Civil and MEP engineering design and construction administration services were performed by a local A/E firm working alongside the design build contractor for fast-track project delivery. Rui Ponte was the PMA principal providing design consultation during the building process to ensure that design intent was adhered and VWUSA corporate image requirements were followed. The project was completed on schedule and within the client's stated budget.
