Description: Ponte Mellor Architects, Ltd. (PMA) provided complete architectural and interior design services for the expansion and renovation of this home on Philadelphia’s prestigious “main line.” The project consists of a main house of approximately 12,000 sq. ft. and a guest house of 2,500 sq. ft. situated on an 11 acre preserve.
The clients purchased the property with an existing small Spanish style home already existing from the 1920’s. Although the property was in need of extensive repairs and upkeep, the existing main house was sited properly on the lot and had a somewhat nostalgic quality. Working closely with the clients, PMA identified ways to meet their expansive program needs while still preserving parts of the existing structure. Because of the size and duration of the project, PMA prepared plans for first re-constructing the guest house so that the clients could move in early while work was being completed on the main house. The main house was greatly expanded to include additional entertainment spaces, bedrooms, a garage structure and a variety of special use rooms such as home theatre, exercise room with complete sauna and steam rooms, hobby workshops and a car museum. Careful research was done for design of wrought iron detailing, traditional stucco methods, use of clay tile roofing and detailing for true out-swing casement windows in mahogany wood.
